Gemini custom app
Connect Halite Recipes to Gemini
Halite Recipes lets Gemini work with your recipe library, meal plan, shopping lists, pantry and food log. Ask in plain language and Gemini makes the change in Halite. Every recipe it touches links back to the app, so you can see the whole thing there.
Halite Recipes isn't in Gemini's app list. You add it yourself as a custom app, using Google's custom app feature and the steps below.
MCP server URL
https://app.halite.cc/api/mcp
Before you start
- A Halite account. It's free: sign up here.
- Gemini on the web, at gemini.google.com. Google says you add a custom app there, and it then works in the Gemini web and mobile apps.
- A personal Google Account. Google says work and school accounts aren't supported for custom apps for now.
- Keep Activity turned on in Gemini. Google says custom apps don't work when it's off.
- Google's current limits for custom apps: you must be at least 18, be located in the US, and use Gemini in English. These are Google's rules and they may change. Check Google's help page for the latest.
- A verified email address on your Halite account. You need it to import recipes from links and to use AI features.
Connect in four steps
-
Open Connected Apps in Gemini
On gemini.google.com, choose Settings, then Connected Apps. If you don't see Connected Apps, choose Personal Intelligence first, then Connected Apps.
-
Add a custom app
Under Custom apps, choose Add a custom app and paste
https://app.halite.cc/api/mcpas the MCP server URL. Halite registers itself with Gemini automatically, so you shouldn't need to open Show more or enter any credentials. Choose Next. -
Sign in and approve
Follow Gemini's on-screen prompts. Halite opens and asks you to sign in if you aren't already. It shows which account you're connecting and that access goes back to a Google address. Choose Approve and you're sent back to Gemini, connected.
-
Use it in a chat
In a Gemini chat, type @ and pick the Halite app you added. Then ask your question.
Things to ask
Find something to cook
“Which of my recipes use lentils?”
“Vegan recipes I've never cooked.”
Change a recipe
“Make the carbonara serve six.”
“Undo that change.”
Save a recipe
“Save this: (paste a link).”
“Write up the curry I just described.”
Plan the week
“Suggest dinners for next week.”
“Move Thursday's dinner to Friday.”
Shop
“Add what I need for Thursday to my list.”
“I've got the eggs and the milk.”
Track what you eat
“Log half the chicken rice for lunch.”
“How much protein have I had today?”
What it can and can't do
- It reads and changes your own Halite account only. Recipes other people share with you aren't available to it, and it can't reach anyone else's account. A change to a recipe you share also shows up in your collaborators' copies.
- Every recipe edit is saved as a new version. Halite keeps the original and the 9 most recent, so older in-between versions are removed as new ones are saved.
- It can't delete recipes. It can remove meal-plan entries, shopping-list and pantry items, and food-log entries, and editing a recipe can remove its oldest saved versions.
- Google says Gemini asks you to confirm actions that change things, such as edits in Halite, and that it can still make mistakes. Check what it's about to do.
What Gemini and Google see
- Whatever a Halite action returns, such as a recipe, your meal plan or your shopping list, goes to Gemini. From then on Google handles it under its own privacy policy and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, not Halite's. Google's help page says it doesn't control or monitor third-party custom apps.
- Halite receives the inputs Gemini sends to Halite's actions. We don't ask for your conversation. Google says that when you use a custom app, Gemini may share information from your chat and other sources, so check what you're comfortable sending. The Privacy Policy lists what each action receives, returns and stores.
- Nothing is shared with Gemini until you connect it and approve access on Halite's consent screen.
Disconnect
In Halite, open Settings → Connected apps and choose Disconnect. Gemini loses access right away.
You can also do it from Gemini. Open Settings → Connected Apps, find the app under Custom apps, choose More details, then Disconnect. To take it out of Gemini completely, choose Remove app instead. Google also lists linked apps at myaccount.google.com/linkedapps.
Manage, export or delete your data
- Export. Open Settings → Export in Halite to download your recipes.
- Edit or remove items. Anything Gemini saved or changed is ordinary Halite data. Edit or delete it in the app, or ask Gemini to. A recipe edit can be undone from the recipe's saved versions.
- Delete everything. In Halite, open Settings, scroll to the Danger zone and choose Delete my account. It removes your recipes, shopping lists, pantry, labels, uploaded photos and usage history, and disconnects every connected assistant. It can't be undone, so export first if you want a copy.
- Data in Gemini. Your chats and what Gemini received live in your Google Account. Manage or delete them with Google's controls, described in Google's Connected Apps help. Deleting your Halite account doesn't delete them.
If something's not working
There's no Connected Apps or "Add a custom app" option
Custom apps need Keep Activity on, a personal Google Account, and Gemini on the web, in English. Google also limits them to people who are 18 or older and in the US. If any of that doesn't fit, Gemini won't offer them.
The Halite app doesn't show up when you type @
Start a new chat and try again. If it's still missing, open Settings → Connected Apps and check that the app under Custom apps is turned on.
Gemini says it can't reach Halite, or asks you to sign in again
Your sign-in has probably expired. Remove the app in Gemini and add it again with the steps above. Reconnecting replaces the old connection and doesn't change anything in your library.
Importing a link fails
Check that your email address is verified. Halite sends the link when you sign up, and you can send a new one from the app.
