How to get your recipes out of Paprika

Paprika has a built-in export on every device. Pick Paprika Recipe Format to move to another app, or HTML for plain files. Steps, limits and where to import.

Paprika has a built-in export on iPhone and iPad, Android, Mac and Windows. You choose one of two formats: Paprika Recipe Format (a .paprikarecipes file) or HTML. The .paprikarecipes file is the one other recipe apps read. The export covers recipes only. Photos are the weak spot, so read the tips below before you start.

Steps

All four of Paprika's official guides use the same flow. In Paprika 3 you pick a category (the default is All Recipes), then a format, then export. You get one format per export, so run it twice if you want both. The Paprika 4 beta adds a Cookbook choice first, covered in the tips.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Settings, then Export Recipes.
  2. Pick a category, then HTML or Paprika Recipe Format.
  3. Tap Export.

Paprika's iOS guide says the file lands in Paprika's documents folder, and that you collect it with iTunes file sharing. On a current Mac that is in Finder. AnyList's help page says some versions of Paprika on iOS can save to iCloud Drive instead, and the Paprika 4 guide has a Save To choice for it. Look in both places.

Android

  1. Open the side panel with the menu button at the upper left.
  2. Choose Settings, then Export Recipes.
  3. Pick a category and a format, then tap Export.

Paprika's Android guide says the file goes to the Downloads folder on your device.

Mac

  1. In the menu bar, choose File > Export.
  2. Pick a destination folder, a category and a format.
  3. Click Export.

To export one recipe, open it and choose Actions > Share > Export, then pick HTML or Paprika Recipe Format. The same submenu has Email and AirDrop, which send a .paprikarecipes file. See the Mac guide.

Windows

  1. In the menu bar, choose File > Export.
  2. Pick a destination folder, a category and a format.
  3. Click Export.

To export one recipe, open it and choose Actions > Export, then pick HTML or Paprika Recipe Format. See the Windows guide.

What comes out and what does not

Paprika does not publish a description of the .paprikarecipes file. The list below comes from open-source projects that read it, such as Tandoor and Mealie, so it is a good guide.

  • In the file: name, ingredients, directions, notes, nutrition (as one block of text), source name and web address, prep, cook and total time, servings, difficulty, rating, categories and the date you added the recipe.
  • Photos: one cover photo per recipe, stored as a small square version. Extra photos in a recipe's gallery are not part of the file as those projects describe it.
  • HTML export: a folder with one web page per recipe plus an index.html that opens in any browser.
  • Not in the export file: grocery lists, pantry, meal plans and menus. On a computer you can print them with Actions > Print. On Mac, the grocery list can also go to Reminders and the meal planner to Calendar.

Paprika's guides describe no download or web view for Paprika Cloud Sync, so export from an app that has your recipes.

Tips

  • Open the recipes you care about first. The Mac and Windows guides say photos upload right away, but other devices download them only when you open a recipe. Some users report that an export then holds only a thumbnail for recipes they had not opened. Paprika does not confirm this, so check a few photos after you export.
  • On Windows, Paprika says your data is stored locally and works offline. Recipe text is on the device. Photos synced from another device may not be until you open the recipe. One user on Reddit says the local copy can still be exported when sync is down. Paprika does not say this.
  • The free trial stops at 50 recipes on Windows. Paprika's pages do not say whether export works in the trial.
  • Paprika 4 is in open beta as of September 28, 2026, and its export screen is different. On iPhone, iPad and Mac it adds a Cookbook choice that starts on the cookbook you are viewing, so choose All Cookbooks to get everything. See the Paprika 4 guides for iOS, Mac, Android and Windows.
  • Export before you delete your Paprika account. Paprika says deleting it removes your synced recipes and photos from its servers for good. Keep a device with your recipes until the export is safe. Export before you try the Paprika 4 beta too.

Where to take your recipes

These apps say they read Paprika files. What carries over differs by app, and most of them do not list it, so look over a few recipes after you import.

  • Plain files. Keep the HTML export in a folder. It costs nothing and opens in any browser. Keep the .paprikarecipes file too, as a backup.
  • Mela says it can import paprikarecipes files. Its help page says it does not support links between recipes or images placed inside the text. See Mela's help.
  • AnyList takes a .paprikarecipes file on its Recipe Import web page: sign in, choose the file, then choose Import Recipes. See AnyList's help.
  • RecipeSage has a Paprika import in its settings. See RecipeSage's docs.
  • Tandoor Recipes lists Paprika as an import source. See Tandoor's docs.
  • Vanilla Cookbook accepts a .paprikarecipes file or a zip of single recipe files. Its docs say it ignores categories. See its import page.
  • Mealie has a Paprika importer in its source code. We could not check its docs page.
  • Halite reads a .paprikarecipes file, and also a single-recipe .paprikarecipe file if your Paprika produces one. It looks for those file endings, so choose Paprika Recipe Format when you export. Use the Import item in Halite's menu. Halite refuses a file over 250 MB and tells you to export fewer recipes at a time. It keeps each recipe's title, description, ingredients, directions, servings, times, source name and link, rating, difficulty, notes, categories (as labels) and the cover photo. Nutrition is read as best it can and also added to the notes as text.

Halite changes some things on the way in:

  • Ingredient lines are split into amount, unit and name. A line it cannot split is kept as written. A range such as "1-2 cups" keeps the lower number, and the ingredient's note says "written as 1-2 cups".
  • A short line that ends with a colon and has no amount in it becomes a heading for a group of ingredients. A line such as "1 cup flour:" or "Salt and pepper, to taste:" stays an ingredient.
  • Numbering at the start of directions is removed.
  • Times like "30 min", "1 hour 30 mins", "1:30" and "90 mins" are understood. A range such as "20-30 min" keeps the longer end, and a time with no number, such as "overnight", is left blank. Either way the original text goes into the recipe's notes under "Original Paprika values", so it is not lost.
  • Servings keep the first number, so "4-6" becomes 4, and the original text goes into the same notes section. A recipe with no servings becomes 1 serving.
  • Notes become a separate note on the recipe.
  • Favorites and gallery photos are not brought over. A cover photo saved in the file comes in as Paprika's small square version. If a recipe has no saved photo, Halite links to the photo on the original website instead, which can stop working.
  • Halite has not been tested with a Paprika 4 export file, which adds a cookbook field per recipe. It ignores fields it does not know, so it probably works.

Halite keeps a recipe's source and the order of its steps. It does not promise the original wording or formatting, so give each recipe a quick look.
